COMIC LIFE

In week 3, we did an activity with comics in which we all made different situations in some comic strips in order to represent the different potentials: the visualization,  the democratization of knowledge and the multimedia and participatory learning.

To do it, Beatriz, Marta and Elena read the document that our teacher Linda proportionated, in which all the potentials were explained by Lemke in 2010, and they made a summary of Lemke’s ideas and the potentials in a document that the rest of the group read in order to make the activity quickly.

After that, Ana Jiménez, Inés and Inma made the pictures of the comic representing the potentials and, for doing this, they used an application called “Dickson comic generator” which was very useful, easy to learn how to use it and it can help you to create any design that you want.

Then, Ana Losada and María de la O made the rhymes for the four scenes which was a very difficult task, but our classmates had imagination and creativity, so at the end, we obtained a good result.

Finally, Inés explained each strip of the comic to the class, in addition, the potentials with the different situations we created.

To start with the acticity product, we would say that a comic is a magazine or book that contains a set of stories told in pictures with a small amount of writing (Cambridge  University press 2019)

This is our beautiful final result of the comic:

In these two first sequences of comic strips, we represent the participatory learning potential.

In this third comic sequence of strips, we represent the democratization of knowledge potential.

And in the fourth one, we represent the visualization potential because the students and the teacher expose their own work using visuals and students have critical thinking.

Before having the feedback of our teacher Linda, we did only one strip in order to represent the potential of visualization. But, after, we have improved it using three different strips, which are very pretty.

This week, the roles were:

Facilitator: Inma

Historian / Journalist: Ana Jimenez y Maria de la O

Curator:  Marta Delgado

Translator: Ana Losada y Beatriz Llamas

Analyst: Claudia Dobón and Elena

Star:  Ines Moreno

This is the reflection of the activity that Claudia and Elena, as analysts, made this week:

In our opinion, the task of this week has been very interesting. The best part of this work is that we have learnt that there are a lot of different and new kinds of comics that will help us to teach any content of any subject because if we had not have done this activity, we would not have had the idea to use this type of methodology in order to teach students and we would not have known that there are so many different types of comic.

For example, now we know that a hieroglyphics comic or a cave art is a good tool for children that don’t like reading because these comics don’t have letters and a superhero comic will motivate children in the last three years of primary school.

In our case, the worst part was doing the rhyme for the verse, because none of us had done a rhyme in English and, also, doing rhymes is a complicated task, even more, when you do not control entirely a language, because it is more difficult to find the correct words. But even with that difficulty, we have managed to surprise everyone with our rhymes. This is the part of the job we are most proud of. Also, there were difficulties to understand the text, which made it more difficult for us but after reading it a few times and asking the doubts among the teammates, we managed to get the story done.

The best moment of the week was when we finished doing the strips and the rhymes because we were happy and proud of our work. Also, we liked the moment when the tasks were distributed and we stayed all together working. We think that it is our strength so we try to stay all together in order to do our best.

We have learnt new types of comics such as the Auca, cave art and hieroglyphics. Moreover,  the potentials that we can encourage in our daily day in our classrooms like the visual potential,  the democratization of knowledge and the multimedia and participation potentiality. It will help us as a teacher in establishing a correct methodology. Also, we have discovered what the potentials are.

From our point of view, the most important is the potential of participatory learning because it is true that Webs 2.0 have provided more facilities to interact and know about people from the other part of the world. This potential facilitates the integration of teaching and learning with society.

One thing that we need to conserve as a group is the distribution of the task. We work better if the tasks of each one are very specific. But also, we have to do the tasks more eagerly, concentrate and do it sooner because we usually have the task for the last minute. Even if the tasks are distributed, we get better results if we do the tasks together. That's because when we have a doubt, we solve it faster.

The content of this task could be related to the content of educational planning because, in this subject, the teacher taught us how to do a PBL, and we think that comics could be very useful in order to do a lot of comic worksheets for students including the main information of any subject on them. Also, one activity of the PBL could be doing a comic as we have done this week, and by this way, children could learn the contents and also how to use ICT to make a comic story.

We think that this activity has a good social connection because nowadays there are a lot of people in the world that read comics diary and they could be a good way of learning if we use them in a pedagogic way. For example: apart from the contents that you can bring to your students, you also complement them using one or various types of comics including the contents of the subject there in order to teach with cheerful, dynamism and originally, and this will be very appreciated by children because they can learn using them and they could enjoy learning.

The five core terms that Beatriz Llamas and Ana Losada have chosen this week are the following:

AUCA: Mainly, an auca consists of some stamps, which contain drawings or pictures made by their authors, and that is accompanied by some rhymes that explain the drawings as well. They are one of the most traditional kinds of comics we have seen this week. They are popular in the east of Spain because they were created in this zone.

VISUALIZATION: The fact that the contents are better understood when we accompany them by visual elements, such as pictures, and audiovisual tools provided by new technologies (for example YouTube). It also improves critical and creative thinking.

THE DEMOCRATIZATION OF KNOWLEDGE: The way in which knowledge is available for everyone because of the opportunity that new technologies have given to the society. It provides us the chance of being always learning, in class and for the rest of our lives.

PARTICIPATORY LEARNING: The new way of learning which includes being connected with people and be able to acquire knowledge through its social aspect. In education, it is necessary to take into account working in groups for learning in a participatory way.

MULTIMEDIA: Refers to every gadget or system used to transmit information. It includes everything related to the ways in which information can be presented, such as videos, photos… Its importance in education remains in the new era of technology that is starting and that needs multimedia for improving.

SELF-EVALUATION:

Inma, who was the facilitator, divided the work into little activities in order to make it easier. Then with Inés and Ana Jimenez made the pictures of the comic. Finally her own post of the facilitator. For this reason, she deserves an eight.

Claudia, who was the analyst, made a summary about the text of innovation with Bea, Marta and Elena and finally her own post of analyst with Elena. For this reason, she deserves an eight.

Bea, who was the translator, made a summary about the text related to innovation with Claudia, Marta and Elena. Finally her own post of the translator. For this reason, she deserves an eight.

Elena, who was the analyst, made a summary about the text related to innovation with Claudia, Marta and Bea.  Finally her own post of analyst with Claudia. For this reason, she deserves an eight.

Marta, who was the curator, made a summary about the text related to innovation with Claudia, Elena and Bea.  Finally she did her own post of the curator. For this reason, she deserves an eight.

Ana Jiménez, who was the journalist with Maria de la O, with Inma and Ines made the pictures of the comic.  Finally her own post of the journalist. For this reason, she deserves an eight.

Inés, who was the star, with Inma and Ana Jiménez made the pictures of the comic. Then she presented in class the comic explaining the potentials with the different situations we created.  Finally her own post of start. For this reason, she deserves a ten.

Ana Losada, who was the translator, made with Maria de la O made the rhymes for the four scenes.  Finally her own post of the translator. For this reason, she deserves an eight.

María de la O, who was the historian, made with Ana Losada the rhymes for the four scenes which was a bit difficult to do it. Finally her own post of the historian. For this reason, she deserves a ten.

In general, we think that, in the activity of comics, we deserve a nine, because we have worked very well, all together, helping each other, and, although they have been difficult to make, our comics and our rhymes are very beautiful.
